Those Mother Pluckin’ 90’s Brows Are Back!
90’s brows are back. It was inevitable with bold brows surpassing their 10 year trend cycle and all things 90’s/00’s dominating fashion, hair, beauty and TikTok, that we would make our way full circle from big eyebrows to skinny and not a hair out of place eyebrows. *Breathe* I promise it is going to be okay, keep reading and let me explain. Do you remember how unsure we were at first when model/actress Cara Delevingne stepped into the scene in 2011 with her naturally thick brows? But then we fell in love with them which eventually led to the cringey, over-filled pomade brow era of 2014-2016. This updated take on 90’s brows is taking us away from over-done brows and introducing us to an effortless brow era.
On TikTok, #thineyebrows has 117.9 million views and #90sbrow has 7.5 million views. Paired with warnings from millennial victims of the 90’s/00’s “comma/sperm brows” pleading gen z not to over-pluck their brows. The hashtag also contains tips on how to temporarily recreate the 90s look using concealer and brow inspiration pics of Bella hadid, and Lily James as Pamela Anderson (Pam & Tommy series), Alexa Demie (Euphoria), and pretty much everyone thanks to the trending “90s brow” filter.
Then And Now
90’s/00’s queen, Paris Hilton is the perfect example of “trailer park hot” skinny brows of the past vs. the new “clean girl aesthetic” skinny brows:
I’ve been a working brow artist throughout the last “big brow” decade, and I was that millennial child who voraciously tweezed out all of my eyebrows to emulate X-tina Aguilera during her Dirrty days. True 90’s brows were pretty traumatizing, which is why full and fluffy brows have had such a choke hold on us brow fanatics for so long. But the new take on thinner brows is refreshing, and also part of the popular “clean girl aesthetic” all over TikTok – think slicked-back hair, dewy skin, minimal makeup, outfits perfectly in place to mirror a neat and tidy lifestyle.
Does this mean the end of brow lamination?
Absolutely not. The modern take on the 90’s/00’s brow is slightly less sparse, and shaped with balance and purpose. Which means brow lamination services and most importantly, getting your brows done by a professional is still very relevant. We have learned from our DIY plucking eyebrow mistakes, many of us paying for them literally with costly microblading sessions to erase the past. I’ve put many of my clients through eyebrow rehab, and the goal is always to bring harmony to the face. Working with your natural brow structure is always the best way to go because a well balanced brow will never go out of style. If you have the hairs to support big, full brows - go for it, and if you have smaller facial features or naturally thinner brows - embrace them!
Whether you prefer bold, fluffy brows or have naturally thinner brows to maintain you can benefit from a lamination service for an effortless “no-makeup” gel-like look.
